How to Read Mutual Fund NAV and What It Means

NAV is the most misunderstood number in mutual fund investing. Here's what it actually means and why it matters less than you think.

What NAV Means

NAV (Net Asset Value) = (Total value of fund's assets − liabilities) ÷ Number of units outstanding. It represents the per-unit value of the fund. When you buy 100 units at NAV ₹50, you invest ₹5,000.

Common Misconception: "High NAV = Expensive"

A fund with NAV ₹500 is NOT more expensive than one with NAV ₹50. NAV only tells you the per-unit price, not how expensive or cheap the fund is. What matters is the percentage return, not the absolute NAV.

How RupeeTracker Uses NAV

When you add a mutual fund in RupeeTracker, the latest NAV is fetched automatically. Your portfolio value = units held × current NAV. The NAV updates daily, keeping your portfolio value current without manual effort.
